Tesla Collision Repair

Tesla Collision Repair – A new report from Tesla has revealed that the electric car maker is taking additional steps to make owning its vehicles as seamless as possible. In an announcement Friday, Tesla informed its customers that Tesla service centers now offer collision repairs, allowing the company to rely less on authorized body shops.

The message was titled “Collision Repair is Here” and explained that Tesla service centers now have the ability to repair a variety of issues, from minor dents and scratches to suspension and axle damage and front and rear bumper repairs. Bicycle and glass repairs could also be handled by service centers.

Certified Collision Repair Service For Tesla

Collision repair services can include: suspension and axle damage, front and rear bumpers, bonnets, tailgates and wing mirror covers, along with doors, wheels and all glass repairs.

To schedule an appointment, select “Collision & Glass Repair” from the Service menu in the Tesla app and track your service experience with turn-by-turn notifications.

Collision repair appointments are scheduled through Tesla’s mobile app, as auto industry director Jerome Guillen pointed out. The company’s focus on using its mobile app was discussed by an executive during a recent fiscal 4Q20 earnings call after a retail investor asked about Tesla’s service issues.

“When it comes to phones, we emphasize the app. We really want all communication to be through the app, the Tesla app. And we try to get away from the phone. Because the app is so much better than the phone,” Guillen said.

Model 3 Collision [is This Car Totaled]?

During the earnings call, Guillen said that Tesla is rapidly expanding its mobile service fleet, with the company aiming to have 50% of its customers’ service needs handled by a mobile team by 2021. The executive also noted that Tesla plans to open 46 new service centers in in the first half of this year in North America.

A Tesla-certified body shop in Austin, TX recently provided a unique look at the work behind the process of repairing and restoring a Model 3 with a damaged B-pillar. As seen in the time-lapse video of the Model 3 repair, the body shop team spent several days repairing the EV with OEM parts, bringing it to showroom condition before handing it over to the owner.

The team behind the vehicle, Autocraft Bodywerks, has been repairing Teslas for years. The shop noted that repairing and restoring Teslas is not as simple as internal combustion vehicles, with electric cars requiring specialized training in aluminum welding and adhesive and mechanical joining techniques. This specialized training was on full display in the recently shared time-lapse footage, as the Autocraft team was seen meticulously working on the vehicle to restore it to its original condition.

The Model 3 in the video was the long-range variant that was involved in a car accident last October. The electric car was punctured right in the middle in the incident, damaging the left side B-pillar as well as the left front and left rear doors. The entire repair took considerable time from removing the damaged column to completely reassembling the vehicle. Reassembly was no fun either, with the Tesla-certified body shop putting the vehicle back piece by piece, from the doors to the glass roof.

Since the Model 3 was T-boned late last year, the entire repair process still took a significant amount of time. Autocraft Bodywerks noted that they only used OEM parts to refurbish the vehicle, which may have contributed to the longer repair times for the Model 3. Tesla is committed to improving repair times for its vehicles, especially as its fleet is currently growing at an unprecedented rate thanks to the Model 3 ramp .

Tesla vehicles are among the safest on the road, with a number of the company’s vehicles receiving stellar safety ratings from agencies such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Factors that contributed to this rating include vehicle bodies that are primarily made of aluminum. Aluminum has several advantages over common automotive materials such as steel, such as lighter weight and great impact energy absorption, but the material is also notoriously difficult to work with. So Tesla requires body shops like Autocraft to undergo training and certification before being allowed to perform repairs on the company’s vehicles.

Elon Musk has pledged to make the repair process for Tesla vehicles much faster and smoother, though he noted that the company is working to achieve a 24-hour turnaround time for vehicles. Tesla has already achieved these feats for minor repairs at its in-house body shops, although the program has yet to see widespread rollout. The company also noted that it is doubling its service capacity this year to accommodate more vehicles.101 Collision Center is one of the few dealerships certified by Tesla Motors to restore its vehicles to original factory condition.
